I work with sensitive people. Maybe because we're claim adjusters, and sometimes get abused all day on the phone, so some of us feel the need to take control when we can. Or maybe I work with a bunch of hypochondriacs.
First, a co-worker (thankfully on the other side of the building from me), had to move her cubicle. She is allergic to grass. She told her manager that when they cut the grass outside, it comes in the building and out through the vent right above her desk. So she moved about 10 feet away, which I'm told made all the difference in the world. Seriously? The grass fumes or whatever traveled all the way from outside into the center of the second floor through the ventilation system, but it can't quite make it another 10 feet to her new desk? OK, whatever.
Second, a co-worker objected to another co-worker's use of those spray cans of air that you spray at your keyboard to clean out all the crap that accumulates in there. She has allergies as well (and also thankfully sits on the other side of the building from me, coincidentally quite near Ms. Grass Allergy). This co-worker complained that the gasses used to propel the air out of the can somehow traveled over the cubicle partition and into her space. As a result, she had to take a break outside for some fresh air. And a cigarette. Seriously. Good to know the chemicals in the can of air are extremely highly toxic and cause reactions in extremely highly sensitive people. But cigarettes, no problem whatsoever. Cigarettes go with fresh air after all, and we all know it's good to get outside.
So whatever I work with a bunch of weirdos. Someday I'll write about the people who actually do sit near me.
