I Still Love Top Gun

I'm reposting an old post about Top Gun. I've since married into a family with Navy pilot in it, but alas, I was too embarrassed (and rightfully so) to ask any of these questions. So here they will remain, in the anonymity of cyberspace, and I will continue wondering.

The reason this is coming up again is because E and I started watching Top Gun, oh I don't know, a year and a half ago or so. The dvd was bad so we only got to see 1/2 of it, and we're just now getting back to it. So, maybe I'll even have more questions to add in about an hour.

I love Top Gun
I've owned the movie Top Gun for quite some time now. Unfortunately, I own it on VHS, and I can't hook up the VCR Suzanne gave me, so I can't watch it. Since I finally joined Netflix last month, I decided it was time to see it again.I have some questions, should I ever have the good fortune of meeting someone who has been to the real Top Gun, or whatever they call it now. That part of the movie scrolled by too fast, so I can't remember what they really call it now, but it's too bad they changed the name.

Anyway:

1) Do they really have fun nicknames on their helmets? [update: the answer is yes, I got E to ask A, but I forgot what his nickname is...]

2)Do they choose their own nicknames or are they chosen for them?

3) Do they haze the new students by making them sing "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling"? If not, they should.

4) Has anyone really flipped off a mig while flying upside down? Because it seems that generally you wouldn't want to get quite that close.

5) And could someone actually manage a Polaroid while doing this? I don't know much about it, but it seems the g-forces or something might make that difficult.

6) What really happens if you buzz the tower without autho? And is there such a thing as autho to buzz the tower? Maybe only if you make sure the boss guy just got a fresh cup of coffee first?

7) Are the bad guys really called "bogeys"? Isn't this Brisith for booger? I'm pretty sure it is, at least in Harry Potter.

8) What's the coolest call sign out there these days?

9) Is everyone really sweaty all the time? Or is this just in the movies?

10) What does the guy in the back seat do? The pilot has to pilot and fire, and the backseat guy seems to just spend his time yelling at the pilot. But there must be more to it than that.

B, this is your old father.

I once worked with two guys who flew Navy fighters. One was the pilot. The other was the guy who did everything else, nav, weapons and on and on.

They were both smart as hell, drop dead funny. Absolutely focused when they needed to be. Utterly relaxed the rest of the time.

I was a privilege to know them. Neither ever demonstrated a hint of uncontrolled ego. (They reported to me, but I don't think that effected how they conducted themselves. That was after their military careers were over.)

They were as opposite as could be. The pilot was brash, killer funny in an odd way. The other guy was thoughtful, considered what he would say before he said it.

Both were magnificent men. Dunno if they went to Top Gun. Doesn't matter.

They shot down the first Mig over Vietnam. They did that a long time ago.

I have huge respect and affection for both of them. Am sorry I lost touch with 'em.
